Mobile Safari without the IPhone
Apple has brought Mobile Safari to the Ipod
Last week, Apple announced the new iPod Touch (essentially, an iPhone without the phone bits). What is particularly interesting about the iPod Touch is that it includes WiFi connectivity and Mobile Safari.
There are two aspects to this release that make it particularly interesting:
- Mobile Safari is now poised to explode in terms of market share, possibly driving a lot of innovation in the handheld browser market, and
- developers now have a far less expensive means of obtaining and testing on the new browser.
What do you think of this announcement? What repercussions do you think we will see?

My friend Kim wrote some random thoughts in her blog about a new technology on our mobiles that allows users to snap a picture with thier mobile camera to reveal invisible art or share there location.
“Scottish researchers are turning camera phones to help bridge the virtual world and the real world. Using image-matching algorithms the researchers have found a way to adorn the real world with digital content.
The technology has already been used to create a guide of Edinburgh that allows people to find virtual artworks placed around the city using their mobile.
Another related project uses the technology to automatically update a person’s blog with their location.

Microvision announced “that it has signed an agreement with Motorola to develop pico projector display solutions for mobile applications leveraging Microvisions ultra-miniature laser based display engine, called PicoP(TM).Tiny laser-based projectors are expected to enable a “big screen” viewing experience from mobile devices. By projecting content displayed on the device screen onto a wall, object or even a curved surface, mobile users could easily share Websites or multimedia applications such as movies, personal videos, mobile TV, photographs and presentations with friends or business colleagues.”
The projected screen looks great from the photo on the website, but I look forward to seeing the screen in person.

Hewlett Packard today demonstrated a new color matching technology that could change the way people shop for products that require color coordination, such as cosmetics. HP Labs, the companys central research arm, has developed a technology that uses sophisticated imaging algorithms and mobile networking to match colors that complement one another, including makeup specific to skin coloring.Retailers, consumer goods and other companies that require a high level of color or image coordination could implement the technology to offer services that help their customers select the right products for their needs.
The color matching technology, which is currently in prototype, builds on HPs expertise in imaging, color science, mobility and networking
This is how it works, instead of sitting down with a consultant at a beauty counter, a shopper photographs herself using a mobile phone camera and while holding a specially designed color chart. The person then sends the photo as an MMS (multimedia message) to an advisory service. That system locates the persons face within the image and color corrects the image for camera and lighting discrepanciesSkin pixels are extracted from the color corrected image of the persons face, and then compared to an existing database of previously captured and analyzed images of skin tones of real people. In a matter of seconds, people using the service receive a text message response with a recommendation on the shades of makeup that are best suited to their complexion.
The technology can work with any mobile operator and on any mobile phone equipped with a camera. Photos demonstrating the color matching technology are available at www.hpl.hp.com/about/media/mobile_image/
