Pondering New Years Traditions

With New Year’s Eve approaching, I am thinking about the many traditions and what they symbolize.  Growing up in my family,  black eyed peas were a must.  I’ve recently found out that  black eyed peas symbolize coins and eating them is supposed to ensure economic prosperity for the coming year. To be honest, I’ve never cooked black eyed peas myself. I buy them in a can already cooked and seasoned. I just open the can and heat the peas in a bowl in the microwave and I’m good to go!

Along the same lines, eating greens symbolizes paper money and eating corn bread symbolizes gold. Some people swear the greens is supposed to be kale, but I’ve heard others claim that spinach is a more tasty alternative. I personally like spinach better than kale, but it kale is simmered with pork fatback and served with vinegar I can eat a big bowlful of that.

The tradition of kissing at midnight may go back to ancient European times as a way of warding off evil spirits. Personally, I think that if you are lucky to have someone you love nearby, a deep, sweet kiss is a great way to both end the old year and start the new one.

Three Fun Days of Comicon

The comicon came through a couple of weeks ago. We had a blast going all three days. Every day we dressed up as someone else from our favorite comic or show. One day I was a walker from The Walking Dead, then I was dressed as a Klingon on the second day. We all dressed as characters from The Endless.

It was so much fun meeting cast members, illustrators and so many more people. I was able to get autographed photos of several of my favorite stars. And I even got to meet the great Stan Lee!

There is a comicon cruise that we are thinking about going on next year. Seven days and nights of hanging out with some of the amazing people we have come to love so much. The costumes that people wear are worth the tickets alone, because they are so amazing. People put a lot of effort into their costumes and some put a lot of money as well. You never know what you are going to see.

I know it may seem silly to some people, but comicon really is a lot of fun. I totally recommend going to one sometime for anyone who likes sci-fi and any of the old school comic books.

A Local Urban Legend

Most Urban Legends are nothing more than flights of fancy. Stories told to young children to get them to behave or to go to sleep. Or those of people who thought they saw something out of the corner of their eye and low and behold,a haunted road or highway. There is one legend that can be substantiated with first hand accounts, manuscripts and legal affidavits. It is the Bell Witch Story out of Adams Tennessee.

The story begins with a family who moves from North Carolina to what is now Adams Tennessee. They bought a farm and spent years clearing and planting crops. Odd occurrences, such as strange looking animals and loud noises began outside the home. However, it didn’t take long for the strangeness to move inside as the entity began to truly harass the family, even hurting members.

A nearby neighbor came with his wife and spent the night to see if they also could hear and see what was happening. They left the next morning shook up and vowing not to return to the house. Many other people experienced the whispers, singing, noises, violent slaps etc…The Bell Witch was never “exorcised”, she left of her own free will and came back twice to “visit” that we know of. If you visit the cave where she purportedly lived on the Red River, perhaps you too can experience her and hear her sing… or worse.

Girls Night Out

So last night was girls night out. My friends and I along with my roommate decided that we were long overdue for some serious clubbing.  We chose The Green Iguana downtown as it has Tiki feel to it and is partially outdoors. It was extremely busy when we arrived as we were fashionably late of course.  We met up with another group of people and played a little pool in the back before we decided to conquer the dance floor.

After a few drinks we were ready to shake and jive as the old timers say and the music was hopping. One reason I really like this place is that they play a wide range of music for everyone, and not just one genre. So whether you like hip hop, country or rock, they have a little bit of everything for everyone. After about an hour though we had to take a break as it was so hot on the dance floor from the lighting and the press of bodies.

The patio felt amazing with a breeze blowing and it really rejuvenated us so we could continue with our partying. I like the fact that they have a kitchen as well, because we had a little snack of appetizers while we were out there. Snacking while you drink is always smart so you don’t get too intoxicated. I still have a mild hangover and was very happy that we took a cab there as safety is always best. Time take a little nap and recuperate now.

Vacation at the beach

The Gulf Coast of Florida is so beautiful it is unbelievable. The beaches have the finest powdery sand I have ever seen in my life and I was able to find dozens of shells and sand dollars to bring home. I was in desperate need of some serious downtime and Florida provided with amazing results. The drive didn’t take long and the weather was perfect for my 3 day vacation.

I arrived at the hotel in the evening and relaxed on the patio while I ate my dinner. After a good night’s sleep with the sliding doors open for a gentle ocean breeze, I was bright eyed and bushy tailed first thing in the morning. Exploring the area was a lot of fun as there was so much to see and do. I visited a nearby State Park and walked the boardwalks for hours. The flora and fauna were just amazing to see.

Later, I tried some of the local cuisine and found that I really love Hispanic foods. They were literally bursting with flavor. I spent plenty of time relaxing on the beach and trying new tropical drinks that were so yummy. I did get a slight burn but not that bad as I used plenty of sunscreen. If you need some downtime, I definitely recommend the Gulf Coast. You will love it !
