A Local Urban Legend

Most Urban Legends are nothing more than flights of fancy. Stories told to young children to get them to behave or to go to sleep. Or those of people who thought they saw something out of the corner of their eye and low and behold,a haunted road or highway. There is one legend that can be substantiated with first hand accounts, manuscripts and legal affidavits. It is the Bell Witch Story out of Adams Tennessee.

The story begins with a family who moves from North Carolina to what is now Adams Tennessee. They bought a farm and spent years clearing and planting crops. Odd occurrences, such as strange looking animals and loud noises began outside the home. However, it didn’t take long for the strangeness to move inside as the entity began to truly harass the family, even hurting members.

A nearby neighbor came with his wife and spent the night to see if they also could hear and see what was happening. They left the next morning shook up and vowing not to return to the house. Many other people experienced the whispers, singing, noises, violent slaps etc…The Bell Witch was never “exorcised”, she left of her own free will and came back twice to “visit” that we know of. If you visit the cave where she purportedly lived on the Red River, perhaps you too can experience her and hear her sing… or worse.
