Study suggests heart risk from calcium supplements

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Older women who take calcium supplements to maintain bone strength may have an increased risk of heart attack, researchers in New Zealand said on Tuesday.

The researchers cautioned that they do not consider their findings the definitive word on the subject, but said the higher heart attack risk they saw merits further study.

“This effect could outweigh any benefits on bone from calcium supplements,” researchers led by Ian Reid of the University of Auckland wrote in the British Medical Journal.

Many women take calcium supplements to try to prevent osteoporosis, a condition in which bones become weak and brittle, leading to fractures.

The study involved 1,471 healthy post-menopausal women, average age 74, who already had participated in a study on the effects of calcium on bone density and fracture rates. Of them, 732 were given a daily calcium supplement and 739 were given a placebo. They were followed for five years.

Heart attacks were more common in the women taking the calcium supplements, with 31 women who took supplements experiencing a heart attack compared to 21 women who got a placebo, the researchers said.

The researchers noted that previous research had suggested that taking calcium supplements might protect against vascular disease by lowering levels of bad cholesterol in the blood.

They said that because calcium supplements raise blood calcium levels, this possibly accelerates the formation of deposits in the arteries that could lead to heart attack.

The new results “are not conclusive but suggest that high calcium intakes might have an adverse effect on vascular health,” the researchers wrote.

“In the meantime this potentially detrimental effect should be balanced against the likely benefits of calcium on bone, particularly in elderly women,” they wrote.

I must assume that this will affect many women, I hope the word gets out about this to the women everywhere who are taking supplements. It seems that many people think more is always better, and I look forward to additional research about supplements and all of the factors that should be weighed in for those people taking them and how much they should take. I also hope that we get more easy to record information about the amounts of vitamins and minerals that we get in our diets which tend to change daily, and therefore give us more information about how we should adjust our supplement intake.

CES 2008 tomorrow

Wendy and I are heading to the airport in route to the consumer electronics show this year in Las Vegas and have already been eying a couple of new gadgets to be showcased there, one of them being the Motorola mobile video projector. If this years CES is anything like last years then I am sure I am going to have a great time but my feet are going to hurt, and my mind is going to be left wanting so much, along with a lot of chit chat, laughs and good times. Anyways I am off to the airport, later.

Underwater mobiles coming

Darlene wrote a great post in her blog about this company that has invented a way of allowing a person to use a mobile phone in the shower by putting a coating on mobile devices to make them repel water, the coating is called “Ion Mask plasma surface enhancement” and is made by P2I. Being able to use a mobile device in the rain or while in the shower without worry of it breaking is pretty cool and I can see almost endless possibilities for uses of this surface coating technology from laptops to clothes, it should be interesting to see what else they really do apply this coating to in the future.
